We’re talking about demographic details like age, gender, income, occupation title, geographic details. Like what? City, state, country, neighbourhood, wherever they live and psychographic details like attitudes, interests, opinions, beliefs, affiliations, organizations, things of that nature.

The better you understand your ideal customer avatar, the better you’re going to be able to make them feel understood when you’re creating your marketing material. And that’s what really moves the needle and gets them to take action. So here’s why.

Having an ideal customer avatar is so incredibly important. Well, when you have this ideal customer avatar in mind, you know who they are. You know what they like, you know how they speak, how they dress, what they do.

Well, then you’re able to make really strategically aligned marketing decisions, meaning you’re able to identify which social media platforms your ideal customer avatar is active in and present on, and which ones they’re not.

You’re able to identify what messages are going to resonate with them and which ones are going to fall flat. And you’re able to determine what types of campaigns to launch and which ones to completely ignore.

You see, when you look at your digital marketing strategically and holistically through the eyes of your ideal customer avatar, everything gets a lot easier, a lot more clear and a lot more effective, which is why it’s my top tip and my top digital marketing strategy for small businesses.

LINK BUILDING

So, if you know anything about SEO you might have heard about links and that they are an important factor for getting your website ranked high in Google search. Well, this is very true. Back at the start of Google, there were a few other search engines that were used more often than Google itself.

The founders of Google Larry Page and Sergey Brin were looking for a way to offer up the most relevant content for people search for things on Google.

They had a brilliant idea! If other websites are linking to content, then that content must be superior to content that isn’t being linked too. So, they made links an important ranking factor, and it worked.

People started to get better results from Google than they did from the other search engines. The rest is history. In the early days of search, SEO was a lot different than it is now.

If website A had 100 links pointing to it and website B had 101 links pointing to it, then website B would be in the top position for the search term.

Then spammers had all manner of tactics to trick Google into ranking their website rather than there competitors. Something needed to be done because the results now were offering up low-quality pages to searchers.

Then April 24, 2012, Google had an algorithm update, and they named it Penguin. This update was targeting links, how they were built and used, and overnight millions of websites that were in the top position vanished, never to be seen again.

Manipulation of links had now been declared Black Hat, and if Google caught you, your website would be penalised and even taken out of the index altogether. 

Now, back to today, links are a still and very important ranking factor, but you need to be very cautious about how you build links and use them.

We only use White Hat SEO techniques with your websites, as Google is smart, very very smart. So following Googles quality guidelines is the only way to go.

It ok to build links but it needs to be done over time and only have links from quality websites. 

LOCAL CITATIONS

Local citations AKA business directories. This is also a useful endeavour we can help you get right. An example of some of these are websites like yellowpages.com.au, truelocal.com.au and yelp.com.au.

Getting your business set up on these platforms can help in a number of ways. Most of these websites will have the ‘rel nofollow attribute’ when you add your business website.  So, the links may not pass any juice, but they can still get your business out there and signal to Google that you are a local business in the Sydney area.

Making sure you are consistent with your details is paramount here. Name, location, phone number, description, list of products/services should match on all citations.

TRACKING AND MONITORING

We use very sophisticated software to track all aspects of your SEO campaign, so at any time we can detect problems with your rankings or website issues in real-time.

This allows us to keep on top of anything that may occur that could harm the progress of your website through the SERPs. We also monitor links that are built to your website the good ones and the bad.

There are some unscrupulous SEO agencies out there, and if your competition is using someone like this, it can be a tactic or even a strategy for them to what is known as ‘negative SEO’.

You will find that some SEO agency who just can’t beat us fair and square because they are hacks, will try to use negative to try to make your website look bad in the eyes of Google.

One way they can do this is by building harmful backlinks to your website. We have a way of rating all your backlink automatically from 1-100 and if we see you are getting some spammy backlinks we can act fast to have them removed or disavowed through Google Search Console.

Content creation is the key! Google has stated many times that content is king. So why is content so important? What Google is looking for is quite simple, they want their users to find the best answer to the query that they type into their search box.

Google will look at all the content and pages it has indexed and rank those pages on many factors. So if your content is boring or it doesn’t answer the question that the user is looking for, then the user will hit the back button and go back to the search engine again.

Google track all of these metrics, this one for instance is knows as bounce rate. As this is a ranking factor.

Another factor with your content is the length and depth. If you have a 500-word article, for instance, trying to rank for the keywords “Dog Walking Service Sydney” and one of your competitors has a 2000 word article trying to rank for the same keyword, then unless your domain authority is extremely high, then Google is more likely to rank your competition before you in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) And the more in-depth you go with the article will also become a factor why someone would stay on your page for longer. How long does it take to see results?

This is like the question, how long is a piece of string. It depends. Once we have completed a full audit on your website, market, competition, keywords and so on, we will have a better understanding of how long it may take. 

If you are a small business and are looking to rank in your local area, this could be as quick as 3 months before you start to see results. 

If you are a national business and need coverage Australia wide, then 12 months is a more realistic timeframe. 

If you are looking for International coverage then 12 months and up is more like what you can expect. 

Obviously, these are just rough estimates, there are so many factors, like the competitive nature of your keyword, how old your domain is, how strong is your competition, and a multitude of other this will determine how long it will take to see results.
