So, if you know anything about SEO you might have heard about links and that they are an important factor for getting your website ranked high in Google search. Well, this is very true. Back at the start of Google, there were a few other search engines that were used more often than Google itself.
The founders of Google Larry Page and Sergey Brin were looking for a way to offer up the most relevant content for people search for things on Google.
They had a brilliant idea! If other websites are linking to content, then that content must be superior to content that isn’t being linked too. So, they made links an important ranking factor, and it worked.
People started to get better results from Google than they did from the other search engines. The rest is history. In the early days of search, SEO was a lot different than it is now.
If website A had 100 links pointing to it and website B had 101 links pointing to it, then website B would be in the top position for the search term.
Then spammers had all manner of tactics to trick Google into ranking their website rather than there competitors. Something needed to be done because the results now were offering up low-quality pages to searchers.
Then April 24, 2012, Google had an algorithm update, and they named it Penguin. This update was targeting links, how they were built and used, and overnight millions of websites that were in the top position vanished, never to be seen again.
Manipulation of links had now been declared Black Hat, and if Google caught you, your website would be penalised and even taken out of the index altogether.
Now, back to today, links are a still and very important ranking factor, but you need to be very cautious about how you build links and use them.
We only use White Hat SEO techniques with your websites, as Google is smart, very very smart. So following Googles quality guidelines is the only way to go.
It ok to build links but it needs to be done over time and only have links from quality websites.
Local citations AKA business directories. This is also a useful endeavour we can help you get right. An example of some of these are websites like yellowpages.com.au, truelocal.com.au and yelp.com.au.
Getting your business set up on these platforms can help in a number of ways. Most of these websites will have the ‘rel nofollow attribute’ when you add your business website. So, the links may not pass any juice, but they can still get your business out there and signal to Google that you are a local business in the Sydney area.
Making sure you are consistent with your details is paramount here. Name, location, phone number, description, list of products/services should match on all citations.
